The government has added dozens of people to the ominous lists of suspected terrorists and those barred from U.S.-bound flights, a crackdown that comes as President Barack Obama is poised to announce changes to the nation’s watchlists.

At the White House on Tuesday, Obama will speak in fresh detail about the findings of the urgent, sprawling reviews he ordered of how the government screens airline passengers and how it works to detect and track possible terrorists. Obama’s remarks, to come after his meeting with top security and intelligence officials, will outline steps designed to strengthen the watchlisting effort and to thwart future terrorists attacks, the White House said.

The move comes after what officials call a botched effort by a Nigerian man to blow up an airliner over Detroit on Christmas, one that exposed cracks in the nation’s security system, which is built upon the ability of agencies to share information and connect dots.

Meanwhile, people flying to the U.S. from overseas will continue to see enhanced security. The Transportation Security Administration has directed airlines to give full-body pat-downs to U.S.-bound travelers from Yemen, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and 11 other countries the U.S. believes have terrorism activity - a move criticized by one Muslim advocacy group.

2010 Situation Grows Difficult for Dems...

My first blog post of the New Year is a political one. I was hoping to have finished reading Terry Pratchett's, The Color of Magic and writing a review about that, but I haven't finished it yet, and this story is rather important, politically.

But first, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and had a blast on New Year's as the ball dropped!

Okay, back to the politics. I hope my next blog post is a novel review. lol...

WASHINGTON – An already difficult situation for Democrats in Congress is worsening as the 2010 political season opens.
To minimize expected losses in next fall's election, President Barack Obama's party is testing a line of attack that resurrects George W. Bush as a boogeyman and castigates Republicans as cozy with Wall Street.
Four House Democrats from swing districts have recently chosen not to seek re-election, bringing to 11 the number of retirements that could leave Democratic-held seats vulnerable to Republicans. More Democratic retirements are expected.
Over the holiday break, another Democrat, freshman Rep. Parker Griffith of Alabama, defected to the GOP. "I can no longer align myself with a party that continues to pursue legislation that is bad for our country, hurts our economy, and drives us further and further into debt," said Griffith, who voted against Democrats' three biggest initiatives in 2009: health care, financial regulation and reducing global warming.
In the Senate, at least four Democrats — including Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and five-term Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd — are in serious trouble. The party could also lose its grip on seats Obama held in Illinois and Vice President Joe Biden long occupied in Delaware.
Going into 2010, Democrats held a 257-178 majority in the House and an effective 60-40 majority in the Senate, including two independents who align themselves with Democrats.
But they face an incumbent-hostile electorate worried about a 10 percent unemployment rate, weary of wars and angry at politicians of all stripes. Many independents who backed Democrats in 2006 and 2008 have turned away. Republicans, meanwhile, are energized and united in opposing Obama's policies.
The one thing that heartens Democrats is that voters also don't think much of the GOP, which is bleeding backers, lacking a leader and facing a conservative revolt.
House Democrats began an ad campaign in December assailing Republicans for opposing legislation restructuring federal financial rules and recalling the final days of the Bush presidency, when the economy tanked.
"Remember? We all know we should never let this happen again," the ad says. It lays into Republicans for voting "to let Wall Street continue the same risky practices that crippled retirement accounts and left taxpayers on the hook for $700 billion."
Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen, who heads the House Democrats' campaign arm, said his party wants to remind voters who was on their side at a difficult time. "The Republican Party in Washington today is no different than the Republican Party that ran the Congress before," he said.
But that was three years ago. Democrats have been in control since, and Bush is long gone. This is Obama's country now. Democrats tried to use Bush against Republican Chris Christie in the New Jersey governor's race in November — and Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine still lost.
A top Democratic priority is minimizing losses among nearly four dozen seats the party now holds from moderate-to-conservative districts that Republican John McCain won in the 2008 presidential race. The most vulnerable in that group include Democratic Reps. Mary Jo Kilroy in Ohio, Harry Teague in New Mexico, Frank Kratovil in Maryland, Tom Perriello in Virginia and Travis Childers in Mississippi.
Reps. Bart Gordon and John Tanner, both of Tennessee, were in that group until they chose to retire. So was Griffith, before he switched to the GOP. Retirement announcements from Reps. Dennis Moore of Kansas and Brian Baird of Washington put two more Democratic seats in swing-voting districts on the GOP's target list.
Democrats insist that Gordon, Tanner, Moore and Baird are leaving for personal reasons and are not the first ripple in a wave of retirements akin to 1994 when 28 Democrats chose not to run, and Republicans won control in part by winning 22 of those seats.
Republicans don't agree.
"Democrats are beginning to see the writing on the wall, and instead of choosing to fight in a difficult political environment, they are taking a pass and opting for retirement," said Ken Spain, a spokesman for the House GOP's campaign arm.
The GOP will be defending at least a dozen open seats because of retirements, with several lawmakers leaving the House to run for higher office.
The situation for Democrats in the Senate is nearly as grim.
Democrats crowed after six Senate Republicans — four from swing states Florida, Ohio, Missouri and New Hampshire and two from GOP-leaning Kansas and Kentucky — announced retirements.
Spirited GOP challenges are now expected in all six states, and Republicans say they are optimistic they retain the seats. An emboldened GOP also is looking to put a pair of senior Senate Democrats our of office.
Reid, who is seeking a fifth term, is faring poorly in surveys in a hypothetical matchup with Nevada GOP chairwoman Sue Lowden, one of several Republicans competing for chance to challenge him.
Dodd, the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee chairman who has taken heat for a discounted VIP mortgage loan he got from a subprime lender, has been consistently behind potential GOP challenger Rob Simmons in Connecticut polls. Simmons, a former House member, has his own challenger in World Wrestling Entertainment co-founder Linda McMahon, who also is seeking the Republican nomination for Dodd's seat.
Also vulnerable are Sen. Blanche Lincoln, a moderate Democrat in GOP-leaning Arkansas, and Sen. Michael Bennet in Colorado, who was appointed when Ken Salazar became Obama's interior secretary.
Republicans have high hopes for picking up Senate seats in Illinois and Delaware that were held by the president and vice president, respectively. Neither of their appointed successors is seeking election to the seats.
Early polling shows GOP Rep. Mark Kirk leading among Republican candidates in Illinois. Veteran GOP Rep. and former two-term Gov. Mike Castle is running in Delaware. Biden's son, Democratic state Attorney General Beau Biden, is considering whether to challenge Castle.

So, the Dems are worried. They should be, and so should the Republicans. People are pissed at a government that spends too much and bailing out bastards who shouldn't be. I hope this coming Mid-Term Election both parties reap what they have sown.

Youth Decay or: Our Contribution to Decadence

Nothing is more fashionable nowadays than dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction with our possessions, our living standard, our social status, society itself. "Those youths are getting worse by the decade!" some proclaim. "This sure can't be everything!" others presume. The common question appears to be: "Where are we going?"

We are raised to identify with the idea of never having enough and usually further it throughout adolescence, until we finally find ourselves financially independent enough to afford us all the luxuries we could possibly desire. Some of us succeed in this mission, some of us fail. What is striking, though, is that there seems to be no tangible difference in personal happiness between people who achieve mentioned material ideal and those who don't. As far as reason goes, there is no direct proportion between material wealth and overall satisfaction with life – yet the modern media and, more dangerously, schools - are still adamantly lecturing us otherwise. It is popularly said that our children are our future; we might very well be painting a gloomy prospect for them.

Students frequently have no choice but to ditch the arts, music and humanities in order to focus on more “marketable” subjects such as mathematics and foreign languages. Changes to curricula are made, more “business-like” topics introduced and made mandatory. Students questioning the purpose of certain content or the importance of assignment grades will commonly be confronted with the argument that selected topics and “good” exam results (which are often derived from repetition rather than understanding) are vital in increasing their chances to land a high-paying job. What hardly anyone asks or explains is why students, or anybody else for that matter, are supposed to need a high-paying job in the first place. Education is profoundly tainted by the circumstance that individuals in our time are forced to study for mere business purposes instead of being given the chance to appreciate knowledge for what it should be, namely the expansion of one's personal horizon, not an enforcement of one's own commodification. A materialist society, however, does not covet an excessively educated individual; it instead desires the cultivation of dedicated consumers bound by brand-loyalty, which is best enforced from infancy onwards. And while museums, scientific research units, libraries and theaters struggle to survive, politicians and journalists alike hypocritically mourn over the unprecedented decomposition of culture and inflation of academic certificates.

Both conditions are self-induced and self-inflicted. Growing up in a materialist society, one is “educated” to erroneously believe that wealth equals happiness. While there is indeed an indication that basic financial stability contributes to contentment, there is no proof that amassing any material possessions beyond the comfortably need-meeting standard really does equal an increase in happiness. Quite the contrary: "status symbols" are often paid for by the equivalent of longer working hours as well as more stressful working conditions, leading the individual to spend less time in their own freedom and more time devoting themselves to the generation of income, at the expense of their social and physical health.

In order to be able to support a materialist lifestyle as propagated as highly desirable by modern society, its education and media, people are increasingly forced to devote the better part of their waking hours to a profession they feel no commitment to, but are compelled to execute solely for its monetary reward. In such, workers - this may include the picker in the factory as well as the lawyer - are required to sell, and therefore partially become, a product which frequently reflects themselves in no way at all. In a time where company ideologies swallow humans whole, there is little room for progressive non-conformity and free-thinking esprit - at the cost of entire generations' personal ideas, potential for growth, mental health and overall enjoyment. The latter are attempted to be compensated for by the individual in his scarce spare time, which, naturally, comes at an additional price - as the entertainment, leisure and pharmaceutical industries line up to ensure to sell it back to us.

We have already cultivated a society in which the majority know how to engineer a website, but on the other hand have no inkling of what their purpose in society, let alone life, might consist of. Instead of assisting in the pursuit of this existential question, materialism reduces the validity of an individual's existence to the contents of their living room. "Success" and "failure" are words that are no longer attributed to features of character, but merely reflect society's evaluation of the figures on one's bank account.

And in the face of all this, we seriously bemoan the cultural decadence reflected by the Nineties and Noughties?

Indian with a hatchet

Artefacts are a major portion of an American-Indian reservation's economy. Annually, thousands of tourists visit reservations and most will not leave without purchasing at least one memento of the traditional Indian culture.

One enterprising Indian was able to outsell his competitors in the sale of wooden dolls by selling them at only a fraction of the cost others had to charge. On examination of his dolls they found that where traditionally hard wood was used, this Indian would use cheap pine on which he glued thin pieces of fine mahogany, thus being able to produce the dolls at only a fraction of the cost.

While he claimed his dolls were still authentic, his competitors complained that it was only a cheap Sioux Veneer.

Conservatives and Anti-Intellectualism

This morning, I read an interesting blog post by Paula Reed. Her entry was based on a quote she'd received by email:

“The Left: People who demonize those with whom they disagree.”

My first thought was to think of how so many neocons today are masters at the art of projection: they take what is commonly done by neocons and turn it around saying it's really liberals doing it.

Personally attacking one's opponents, instead of coming up with reasoned rebuttals to their ideas is intellectually dishonest and is a symptom of the creeping anti-intellectualism in this country; an example of the dumbing-down of America. It's much easier to blame liberals for everything that's wrong in our world today, than to come up with ideas on how to fix these problems together.

Gone are the days of erudite conservatives, such as William Buckley. Also largely gone are those conservatives, such as Barry Goldwater, who was able to often put ideological differences aside and work in a bi-partisan manner with his Democratic colleagues (now, I bet that is a word you don't hear too much in Washington nowadays) for the good of the country.

Now, it's neocon pundits, such as Limbaugh, Savage, and Coulter, among many others, who have brought the black and white, simplistic tactic of using ad hominems against their opponents in from the far right fringes of the tinfoil hat brigade into mainstream conservative thought. Or what passes for thought. This is not to say that the left is entirely free of such nonsense -- there are liberals, such as Rosie O'Donnell, who could hardly be called intellectual. But those such as O'Donnell hardly have the reach or the influence tha those in the pantheon on the right wing do

I heard a prime example of this type of anti-intellectualism the other night while listening to the radio. A man called the Dennis Miller show to express why he rejected intelligent design. Miller didn't give him much of a chance to speak. Instead he cut him off to say that he couldn't get on board with Darwinism because he just couldn't get into the idea of "worshipping a pile of amino acids" and that he liked the idea of an intelligent being creating life on Earth.

My jaw dropped when I heard this nonsense. I could not believe that Miller, a former liberal and former cast member of Saturday Night Live -- in other words, someone who should know better -- was spouting off such simplistic ideas. There was once a time when being a conservative did not mean one also had to accept intellectually bankrupt, fundamentalist Christian beliefs as well.

Instead of the Buckley types being the mainstream of conservatism, we now have the Archie Bunkers of the world running the Republican party, which is a sad thing for old-school Republicans and the party in general.

Christmas Message & Actor Patrick Stewart

Sci-Fi Wire is reporting that actor Patrick Stewart - of Star Trek: The Next Generation and X-Men fame - may well be Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on New Year's Eve. That is so damned cool! (Btw, Christmas Message is at the bottom of this blog post.)

I've been a huge fan of Patrick Stewart's since I watched the 1980's movie, Dune and then on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The latter is where I truly saw him in action for a lengthy period and saw the range and talent he had.

His version of The Christmas Carol was a hoot to watch, and is one of my favorites. I try to watch it every Christmas, but, sometimes it isn't on. Maybe Netflix will have it available to watch on it's Instant Play. Then I can watch it on my PC with the ol' headphones on while folks are in the other room doing their talkin'. *snicker* Not that I'm a 'Scrooge', or anything. *whistles innocently*

All joking aside - I know, it's so difficult for me to do =P - he is definitely one of my top actors. Coming only after John Wayne, Charlten Heston, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant. Can you tell I watch really old movies? lol... *facepalm* Not that I don't watch a crap load of new stuff though. There are many actors and actresses I enjoy watching nowadays, but my memory sucks when it comes to names and it takes years for me to finally go, "hey! I know that actor's name!"

Anywho, here's the article:

Patrick Stewart—Star Trek's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men's Charles Xavier—will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, according to a report in the British newspaper the Mirror.

In addition to appearing in films, Stewart has been spending much of the last decade performing on the British stage. He is to be knighted by the queen on this year's New Year's Honours list. (The news isn't official yet; the newspaper bases its report on anonymous sources.)
Palace sources said the Queen is a huge fan of the 69-year-old, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
If he is knighted, Stewart will join fellow X-Men star Ian McKellen
